I’ve been in an unpleasant funk for the past couple weeks, but I finally got around to reading my rarepair exchange gift and it put a smile on my face at least:

The other writing project I’ve been noodling over these past few weeks is another Nie Huaisang/Yue Qingyuan fic - post-canon for both, alternating(?) POVs, may or may not be a thinly veiled excuse to indulge in cool-but-cursed-magic-sword worldbuilding. Given my current speed it’s unlikely I’ll have anything concrete to show for it before... 2025, maybe <_<... but on the other hand I do have ten full pages of notes and plans already and listen. Listen. It’s such a fun ship to play with and I’m so happy to be back at it again.

Edited August 10th: all right, keeping up with that weekly schedule isn't working for me at the moment so I'm taking a real break while I fully edit chapter 2, and I'll be back with it when I'm done with it - hopefully sometime in September.

One thing I worry about a lot in this fic is hitting the right balance of Shen Yuan as an outside observer v. Shen Yuan as an active participant. I feel like this scene and the previous one get it mostly right, so hopefully I can carry that going forward.

So, this fic. This fic has overshadowed my life for almost a year. It started life as a little file titled ‘my 5k love letter to Qi-ge’, and then it kept growing and growing until the full rough draft pushed past 20k. I really want to use this summer to get the bulk of the edits done, and I figure sharing each scene as I go is as good a way as any to give myself some structure.

The fic has 21 scenes of various lengths (seriously - some, like this one, are just a couple hundred words. Some are a couple thousands). The plan right now is to post one of them every week until I’m all caught up with what I have, at which point I’ll just start posting them whenever they’re ready. Note that this is still a WIP/draft - I’ll definitely be looking for beta-readers once I get the full thing done, but in the meantime don’t hesitate to point out typos and internal inconsistencies.

... I’ve accepted, by now, that it’s just going to happen every year 'xD I feel like every time I fall a little bit more in love with this book & find more things to enjoy. This time around I just kept thinking about how genuinely kind Shen Qingqiu is under all the complaining – he may insist he’s only trying to save his own skin, but this is a man who never met someone in danger he didn’t want to help or someone hurting his heart didn’t go out to and I love that for him.

(Granted, he’s usually way off base about why people are hurting, but it’s the thought that counts.)

Now that the official translation is out in full, I took the time to reread The Scum Villain Self-Saving System and man. I forgot how hard the ending went on Thematic Resonance.

There is one universal truth Nie Huaisang learned from Wei Wuxian and confirmed for himself many times since: if you want to find information, start by finding the nearest wine shop.

The Before Dawn Bloom was apparently something of a local celebrity, a point of pride for a village that would otherwise have long since fallen off the map. A few questions were enough to get not only the waiter, but the other patrons going as well, all except the only other traveller, a Cang Qiong Mountain disciple dressed in the sober but elegant manner of Qiong Ding Peak and who was gazing off into the distance, politely keeping up the pretence of not eavesdropping on a stranger's conversation, though there was no escaping it in such a small space. In no time at all Nie Huaisang had all the information he could want and more: yes, such a flower could be found right here, on top of this very mountain; only you had to look for it at night, for as soon as the light of the sun touched it it would burrow deep underground, where it would slumber until the next sunset...

So high up the mountains, the winter is colder than ever, but for the first time in his life Yue Qi is always warm.

He has been given a coat, and proper winter clothes; his shoes are no longer threadbare, but solid fur-lined boots. The halls are filled with a thousand small luxuries everyone here seems to take for granted; when the other disciples still complain about the cold a nervous-looking An Ding senior is quick to procure tangpozi to slip between their sheets.

Yue Qi basks in the warmth, eager to share with Xiao Jiu once they're finally reunited.

Like all of Airplane Bro's good ideas, the fire-bellied bats were a masterclass in missed opportunities. ("Shizun.") In the original, they might as well have been regular bats ("Shizun."), their short and tragic lot in life to facilitate one measly BingYing filler before vanishing into the night, but the real deal were a fascinating—

"Shizun!"

Shen Qingqiu finally turned his attention to the situation at hand.

Ah.

Some of his disciples appeared to be mildly on fire.

Shen Qingqiu unfolded his fan with a flourish and gave his best well-what-are-you-looking-at-me-for, if-I-do-everything-for-you-you-will-never-learn stare.
