aroberuka: (books)

I’ve been in an unpleasant funk for the past couple weeks, but I finally got around to reading my rarepair exchange gift and it put a smile on my face at least:

long-distance relationship by [anonymous] (1,139 words, NAWA)

Nie Huaisang visits Yue Qingyuan after Maigu Ridge.

(... it features Nie Huaisang being the older and more experienced Sect Leader of the two, which I never thought about before but am now thinking about very hard and listen! I love it so much!! I kinda want to write a whole fic’s worth of Nie Huaisang being Yue Qingyuan’s reluctant long-distance mentor now 'xD)

This made me realize that I completely forgot to rec my Seasons of Drabbles’ Summer Round gifts! Here they are:

hawks and cranes by oisanite (The Bride’s Stories, Tileke & Amira)

Tileke is fascinated by the new bride’s daemon.

Hack by syrupwit (Scum Villain System, Shen Qingqiu & Shang Qinghua)

Shang Qinghua's cheap tricks cause trouble.

Remnants by LookingForDroids (Homestuck, Aradia & Feferi)

Exploring the dream bubbles, Aradia encounters one more familiar ghost.

aroberuka: (books)

Seasons of Drabbles’ Spring Round Collection opened last week, and I got three lovely gifts out of it, so here’s a slightly belated rec post (all Gen, rated G, NAWA):

Blooms by Jubileen (Fire Emblem Engage, Céline)

Céline had always reached for the flowers.

Ribbit! by LookingForDroids (Homestuck, Jade Harley & guests)

One new planet among many.

In Plain Sight by catchmeifyoucreon (Word of Honor, Liu Qianqiao)

Qianqiao worked hard to master the art of disguise.

And the two I wrote:

Metamorphosis (Scum Villain System, Yue Qingyuan & SY!Shen Qingqiu)

Survival Instinct (Scum Villain System, OG!Shen Qingqiu & Shang Qinghua)

Some Lalonde feels for the DNA square of my ladiesbingo card.

Multifandom Drabble’s collection opened today and I was gifted four (!) absolutely amazing drabbles so have a quick rec list:

A Very Special Episode by tuesday (Slime Rancher, Beatrix)
Some people want to do more than ranch slimes.

rolled a 20 in persuasion by io2 (Homestuck, Aradia & Tavros)
Aradia encourages Tavros to team up with her.

tricks by SkyRose (Stranger Things, El & Max)
“Teach me,” El stated, holding Max’s skateboard.

Dance Lessons by Sholio (Stranger Things, Steve & the kids)
The kids want to learn to dance for the Snow Ball. Steve regrets his life choices.

And the two drabbles I wrote:

Little Rebellions or 4 Things Regina George must never, ever know (Mean Girls, Gretchen Wieners)
Common Ground (Final Fantasy 9, Vivi & Quan)

aroberuka: (work)
So I have a prompt for fluff, another for light-hearted stuff, and more importantly I really needed some cuteness. Have some recs.
Will be updated as I find more. If you read anything you do like please let the author know!

conditioner by floralathena (Stranger Things, Gen, 2018 words):
“This is a straightening iron. It can make your hair look more like mine, but only for a little bit. A couple hours to a couple days, depending on how you treat your hair before and after. It’s very hot. Don’t touch it.”
Jane nods very seriously. She’s touched a lot of hot things, on purpose and on accident, in the past few months. The straightening iron is lying on the counter, angled so that the hot bits are hanging over the sink. Steve’s hands rest on her shoulders as he stands behind her. He is making eye contact with her in the mirror. She looks a lot shorter than him because she’s sitting on a stool that he dragged in from the kitchen.

You know how sometimes a fic brings up a headcanon you never thought about before but instantly accept as your own? This is one of those. Steve teaches El basic hair care, and the result is too precious for words. Cute and funny with a great El voice.

--

Keeping Up by Delicate_Doll (Hiveswap, Tyzias/Stelsa, 1850 words):
"Babe- hold on I wanna run with you"
Your name is Tyzias Entykk, and you're just as surprised as Stelsa when that ungodly sentence comes out of your mouth. What's said is said though, and by the ecstatic look on her face, you don't think she'll accept take-backsies.
Tyzias makes a terrible mistake and has to see it through. I really like the narration here—Tyzias sounds a bit snarky, a bit put-upon, and completely baffled by her own life choices.

--

Peaceful Waters by AlphaShae (One Piece, Gen, 506 words):
Once nakama, always nakama.
Absolutely adorable ficlet in which Merry reflects on the journey so far and welcomes a very special member to the crew.

--

Poc’s Grand Day Out by MundaneChampagne (Mass Effect Andromeda, Gen, 988 words):
The Tempest is docked at the Nexus. Poc disembarks, determined to have an adventure of her own.
This one was an instant fave back when I first read it and it never fails to deliver—Poc has so much personality here, and she's clearly having a blast throughout!

--

Scenes from a Dojo by Angel_Negra (Leverage, Gen, 1537 words):
Eliot found a way to make his style work at Dalton Academy. It just worked a little too well.
Follow up to The Fairy Godparents Job in which Eliot keeps the self-defense lessons going. I'm always a sucker for missing scenes, and this is a pretty amazing one: very sweet, very funny, very true to canon.

For the Found Families square of my gen prompt bingo card! 3 fic recs, to be updated if/when I read more. Enjoy, and if you read anything you like don't forget to thank the author :)

--

after the (radioactive) dust settles by strix_alba (Stranger Things, Gen, El/Mike, Will/Mike, 40577 words)

Series of post-season 2 fics. The first is about Max and El and the beginnings of ~Friendship~, the second is a Mike/Will & Mike/El slow burn that focuses mostly on Will’s recovery and relationships in general, and the third picks up some threads that were left hanging by the first two and ties them up with a series of rotating POVs. The last two are when the found family feels fully kick in but I wholeheartedly recommend all three anyway for being sweet and heartwarming and a rare case of ‘better as friends’ that actually feels entirely genuine.

--

Stay Lost on our Way Home by CurlicueCal (Homestuck, Gen, 41672 words)

Your name is Auto-Responder.

You are 95% certain that you are the worst possible person to be placed in charge of a small child. Even if that child did start life as a guardian-ninja-bunny companion-bot.

Also your friends are assholes and the universe hates you.

-------

In which AR gets left behind, dumped into a dystopian universe of cast offs, and has to deal with a dangerous new world and a troublesome new body all alone.

Well. Not completely alone.

I may or may not have *just* read that one in one sitting xD Great worldbuilding, great characterization narration included (Strider rambles everywhere), and a fantastic exploration of AIs & bots dealing with FLESH VESSELS and also FEELINGS despite asking for NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS.

First in a series, can stand on its own, but tbh the only reason why I’m not reccing the whole thing is bc I’m not caught up yet.

--

World Keeps Turning by Sholio (Stranger Things, Gen, 4966 words)
More 2x09 post-battle aftermath, in which Steve has a concussion and an unruly pack of kids to look after, and everyone ends up at Hopper's cabin.
More post-season 2 (though I guess it’s less post-season 2 and more pre-epilogue missing scene? technically? potato-potato?) goodness. Sholio’s fics are always good for found family feels but this is the one I keep coming back to because 1)unexpected sleepovers 2)ensemble fic(!) and 3)character growth & heartfelt moments.

Post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

i think the allosaurus broke out again (Zoo Tycoon, Gen, 2066 words): once upon a time, I got to write a Zoo Tycoon fic for an exchange, and it was fantastic. You really don’t need to know anything about Zoo Tycoon to read this one, and I heartily recommend you go read it anyway—I like to think it’s just as much fun to read as it was to write.

Punching boulders (Fire Emblem Fates, Gen, 100 words): the first drabble I wrote for drabblesoup, and still my favourite one. It’s short, to the point, and it still delivers.

And in the spirit of reccing things I had a blast with, I’m currently having a lot of fun relearning how to draw through homestuck/pokemon headcanons.

aroberuka: (xmas)

Promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.
  • birdstudies (also here as an actual website) is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: daily bird drawings with accompanying blurb. Really pretty and informative, and always nice to see on my feed.
  • drabblesoup is a weekly drabble (exactly 100 words) challenge with no actual deadline. Lots of cool fic to read, and plenty of prompts to chose from if you want to jump in!
  • I love bingo communities in general, but genprompt bingo gets all my love for being low-pressure and allowing my sex-repulsed, romance-bored aroace ass to get a card without having to burn all my exclusions on relationship stuff.

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

I completely failed to keep up with this year’s Snowflake Challenge, but it’s never too late for recs, so here’s three of my faves from last year:

And Straight On 'Til Morning
by Selkit (Until Dawn, Gen, 3004 words)

"Jess and Matt make the trek back to the lodge, step by halting step."

I'm very biased here, but this fic is everything I ever wanted from the UD fandom: friendship, post-trauma emotional support, and Jess & Matt bonding over creepy monsters and insecurities. Beautifully written, with some delightful character moments.

The Lazy Painter
by BlackMageofPhantasm (One Piece, Gen, 87003 words, WIP)

"Really, it was supposed to be an easy mission. They'd kill the pirates, capture the princess and then she'd go back to eating her rice crackers. But all of her allies had been defeated, leaving her alone. It would've been so easy to let her enemies go, but she wouldn't. She was a pro, and no matter who her targets were, she'd always complete the mission. Nothing would change that."

A One Piece canon divergence AU starting right after Little Garden where Miss Goldenweek sneaks aboard the Merry to finish her mission and promptly gets herself caught; featuring friendship, character development, and the Straw Hats being the weirdest pirates on the seas.
Also it's an epic length fic that adds backstory & character development to a minor female character without making it about romance and if that's not the dream idk what to tell you.

Professor Peach’s Adventures in Pokémon Recovery (Pokémon, Gen, N/A)

Absolutely lovely comics about Pokémon care and care through Pokémon; easily some of my favourite Pokémon headcanons out there.

aroberuka: (work)
For the Food & Cooking square of my trope bingo card! 11 15 fic recs all centered around food or cooking. About half of those are Sanji-centric One Piece fics b/c that's where my head has been lately, but there's also some Pushing Daisies, Leverage, Fire Emblem, Fallout 4, Hiveswap, Naruto.

Will be updated as I find more gems! In the meantime enjoy, and if you read anything you like don't forget to tell the author <3

20/04/21: 3 years down the line, this has been updated enough that this header is a bit silly but I'm keeping it for posterity. Many fic & art recs that are all about food and cooking, from p. much every fandom I've been into these past few years. Enjoy.

To the recs! )
Starting off with a recent fave! Despite the tags, Franky is only there for the first bit; the rest is all Sanji bonding with a young Fishman girl and her family, and it’s a fucking delight. Great OCs, great worldbuilding, great Sanji characterization.

--

A Day in the Life of A Cook by Sarcasticles (One Piece, Gen, 2957 words):
The Straw Hat Pirates have no idea how much it takes to feed them, and Sanji is determined to keep it that way
Pretty much exactly what the title offers: a day in Sanji’s life, complete with a lot of Straw Hat shenanigans and Luffy being. Luffy.

--

Felicia and Charlotte Support Conversation by mabariis (Fire Emblem Fates, Charlotte/Felicia, 988 words):
What if Intelligent Systems let more women talk to each other, and also could write decent gay content? I did it instead.
A support line for Charlotte and Felicia that progresses to S-rank.

Very cute canon-style fic (with sprites!) in which Charlotte offers cooking lessons and Felicia fails at them. A lot.

--

Four-letter Fruits by radio_silent (Pushing Daisies, Gen with background Chuck/Ned, 301 words):
At least Olive didn't wander around kitchens unemployed and unannounced.
In which Olive makes a valiant effort to be more family-friendly, and take the name of fruits in vain. Cute, funny, and delightfully in character for the whole cast.

--

Fried Squid by Konsui’s Little Brother (One Piece, Gen, 680):
When they got out of this part of the Grand Line, Zolo was never letting another piece of squid touch him again. For now though, he'd eat it with no complaint.
One of the first fic I read in the fandom, and still one of my favourites. A rough patch leaves the crew with limited food supplies, everyone grows tired of eating squid, and Zoro shows support in his own way.

--

Full Up on Foils by Anonymous (Homestuck, Gen, 2400 words):

Dirk can't cook real food, Jane is horrified by what he does attempt to eat, and a very tiny secret plot ensues. Mostly, it's just the beautiful feeling of friendship.

Dirk & Jane friendship fic with fantastic dialogue and a side dish of Earth C worldbuilding, feat. rock tea, knife-adjacent implements and the twenty-three essential sugars.

--

If You Want It Done Right by Angel_Negra (Leverage, Gen, 271 words):
A couple of firsts for Alec and Eliot.
Eliot sees Hardison’s kitchen, Hardison sees Eliot’s computer, and neither one is very happy with what he sees. Short, clever, and full of humour.

--

Insatiate by vageege (One Piece, Gen, 5682):
Sanji smokes cigarettes for a couple of reasons.
A look at Sanji, food, and the long-term consequences of starving as a child. Unlike every other rec on this list this one deals with some pretty heavy stuff so please mind the warnings in the author’s note.

--

Life Expectancy of Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Harshly Dropping by Arvanion (Fire Emblem Awakening, Gen, 101 words):
NEWS IN BRIEF - Local - Food - Issue 50-04 - Jan 24, 2014
This one is so short there’s not really anything I can say about it except that it fits right in with the silliest parts of the game, and at 101 words there’s really no reason for you not to give it a read.

--

A Little Slice of 2077 by Nebulad (Fallout 4, Hancock/Sole, 1111 words):
“You’re gunna kill me, hollerin’ like that,” he said as he made his way down the stairs.
“You say that about everything I do,” she protested, still enchanted by whatever was inside the dome. She was clicking buttons frantically but he didn’t think she was getting anywhere.
“Kind of hoping if I go it’ll be because of a perfect ten,” he said, nudging her as he finally got down the stairs.
Nebulad’s OCs are always compelling and Audrey is no exception. Part of a series, but can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone, though I’d heartily recommend giving the whole thing a go anyway.

--

not your momma’s cooking by CopperCaravan (Fallout 4, Mac/Sole, 1019 words):
tumblr prompt fill: Mac & Cal + "You want me to do what?"
Cal has sorely missed good food and enlists MacCready in food prep.
Another author with great OCs! In which Cal harasses Mac into hunting some chickens and laments the difficulties of post-apocalyptic cooking.

--

The Proper Care and Feeding of Your Demonic Cultivator - An Artwork by Lasenby_Heathcote (The Untamed, Gen, N/A):

Jiang Yanli teaches Lan Wangji how to make soup.
Listen. I'm a sucker for the in-laws bonding, and this is very cute. That's it that's the rec.

--

Pumpkin Cravings by cassowarykisses (Hiveswap, Gen, 1264 words):

Joey's been having trouble finding food to eat since she landed on Alternia. Xefros decides to cook her something.

In which Xefros discovers strange facts about aliens and puts his butler training to good use. Nice friendship fluff that doesn’t quite let you forget life’s been kind of a dick to these kids.

--

Rice Paper by greenkangaroo (Naruto, Gen, 877 words):
If you leave a secret in the box just outside their compound's back door, an Akimichi will eat it, written on rice paper.
This one is a bit of a different take on the prompt, but I couldn’t not include it. A very cool piece of worldbuilding about the Akimichi Clan the kind of which I wish we had in canon.

--

Taste Challenge by Maldoror_Chant (One Piece, Gen, 6378 words):
Sanji didn't wonder why he gave himself the challenge. It didn't matter why. ‘Why’ was probably covered by one-upping the bloody swordsman, and maybe there were other reasons - stranger reasons - but that was the only one that really counted, right? It was decided. He was going to get Zoro to appreciate - no, love Sanji's food. If Sanji couldn't do it, then he wasn't a true sea-cook after all.
There is an accidental, additional theme to my One Piece recs and that theme is: Sanji & Zoro nakamaship. In this one, Sanji’s competitiveness gets just a little bit ahead of him, and a lot of delicious, delicious recipes are introduced in the process.

--

You're not alone, you know. by dedicatedfollower467 (Homestuck, Gen, 1203 words):

Jane tries to keep Dirk's head screwed on straight, and despite himself, he really appreciates it.
Just some friendship fluff.

Very nice post-canon hurt/comforty fluff! I have a huge soft spot for friendship between the Alpha Kids and this one was an instant fave and also kinda made me crave meat pies.

Not Epilogues compliant, but do watch out for (very vague) spoilers in the author's note.
