Mom Lalonde & Rose
All gods fail, all mortals die by Exmoose (art + 61 words)
""Children might or might not be a blessing, but to create them and then fail them was surely damnation."-Lois McMaster Bujold, "Barrayar"”
CW: blood, canon character death.
Two art pieces & accompanying microfic retracing the length of Mom Lalonde's life! Everything is beautiful and everything hurts.

Can I Fly? by orphan_account (714 words)
“The universally asked question by children, whether or not they can fly. When they were young, four children asked, and four guardians responded.”
CW: underage drinking, canon character death.
Really spot-on study of all the Beta Kids’ relationships with their Guardians, but today’s all about Lalondes so let’s talk about Mom, trying to make the world a little more magical for her daughter, and Rose reacting in true Rose fashion.

inktober 23 & 27 by floralmarsupial (art)
floralmarsupial’s designs for the kids are some of my favourites, and I really love those comic strips for how quiet & understated but also viscerally disturbing they are. Grief / guilt the way Rose would want it (buried deep beneath layers of snark & freudian symbolism).

lingers by correctDichotomy (art)
“anger is not the end of it”
CW: drinking, underage drinking, canon character death.
Pre-retcon Meteorstuck Rose is always incredibly painful and this hits all the feels--the smile? The spilled drink? Ghosts with more presence than the living? It's fantastic go look at it.
Alpha Rose Lalonde & Roxy
The Future’s Not Ours To See by arenoseAnima (461 words)
“Alpha Rose writes a letter.”
CW: drinking, underage drinking.
... to an absent daughter. The style is very Rose and the letter delivers one hell of a punch.

I Walk In Her Shadow by Khemi (2624 words)
It's your last night on earth and you find yourself here, drinking wine like a mother you do not have, thinking of a daughter you will never meet.
CW: drinking, underage drinking.
I have a thing for fics that explore the life & death of the Alpha Kids' Guardians and this is a fantastic one. Very well-written with just a touch of purple prose (because Rose) that doesn't overwhelm. Very heartbreaking.

Just Say The Magic Word by chromyrose (4175 words)
“Hello, Roxy,” she repeats. You are ready this time and don’t scream, but you hold Mutini tighter. “My name is Rose. I am your mother.”or, parenting in the 25th century
CW: underage drinking, some sexual content but nothing graphic & no actual sex.
If, like me, you've spent way too much time thinking about Roxy growing up surrounded by carapacians but with no other human company, boy do I have the fic for you! Bittersweet with a lot of really cool worldbuilding & backstory expansion.

Solace by Skylark (636 words)
“You need a shower and you need a drink and you need arms around you, holding you.”
CW: drinking, underage drinking.
With bonus Striders! Four little vignettes on relationships with absent people. Everyone is lonely and everything hurts.

To Be Whole, To Be Holy by Latia (art + 1042 words)
“"I know this isn’t very maternal of me, forcing you into my line of work. I’ve seen the movies, I’ve heard the moral to every story. But you need to understand—this is the only way you have a hope in Hell of survival. Starting right now, you’re in a beauty pageant called Life and Death, and you’ll only be able to win by being more pretty and more witty and more willing to pull a trigger than any of the other little girls."”
CW: canon character death.
Plays on format are always fun. This one uses art & fic to build a video log, and it works very well! And a well written Rose too.
Rose & Roxy
Only Children by Elizabeth Culmer (edenfalling) (646 words)
The thing is, Roxy never really wanted a sister. She wanted her mom.
With bonus Jane & Roxy friendship! (Alright so it's all Jane & Roxy friendship.) Mother to sister is a pretty big shift in perspective and it's really nice to see that addressed.

Somebody’s little girl by Exmoose (art + 585 words)
Roxy awkwardly tries to bond with Rose
Very cute ficlet in which Roxy & Rose bond over shared interests (it's not wizards this time). One of the best Roxys I've read, and it's really nice to see the more awkward/dorky side of Rose for a change.
