Word of Honor

A bit late to the party, but I started watching Word of Honor a couple weeks ago now. I’m trying to hold myself to only watching two episodes a day, for the sake of my sleep schedule and to avoid blowing through it too quickly. 24 episodes in and it’s, uh, definitely getting harder not to binge the rest so maybe I’ll make an afternoon of it sometime this week-end :p
There’s so much of everything going down right now, with big important secrets getting revealed and big important plot points coming to a head, but I keep getting distracted by how utterly charming I find Cao Weining as a character. Listen! He’s such a delight whenever he’s on screen. He really took one look at A-Xiang at her most brash and aggressive and immediately went ‘Ah, there she is, the love of my life’ (and then everyone around him went ‘yep that’s about what we expected from you’, which pleases me to no end). He’s way too adorable to live peacefully in a cdrama but I’m still sitting there like I’ve only had him for five episodes and if anything happens to him I will be sad forever. (‘What if they disapprove?’ ‘You’ll kidnap me!’ bless.)
Honestly, I really like the secondary cast in this one, which is what makes or break most tv shows for me. A lot of the early players have faded into the background by now (will we ever see Xiaolian again? pending...), which is a bit of a bummer, but I love Gu Xiang and Chengling with my entire fucking heart, and Ye Baiyi is so precisely my kind of asshole it’s ridiculous - I did not know how much I would enjoy ‘grumpy old man who still looks in his prime and has the arrogance of youth, the confidence of old age, and the talent to back them up’ until there he was.
From a quick look at AO3, it doesn't look like there’ll be a lot to read for my primarily gen-loving self, but I can’t wait to dig into what's there.
