These two fucking kill me.

It’s like--

Here’s two people with so much in common, both of them hopelessly devoted to self-serving cowards who treat them terribly, who can be really nice and loving when things are going well but will leave them to struggle alone as soon as the shit hits the fan; both of them increasingly, painfully aware that these people will never change, yet at the same time unable to let go. And they’re not friends, they’re barely even allies, but it’s very obvious that they recognize a lot of themselves in the other and it moves them, what they see, to treat each other with a respect and understanding they show very few people. They don’t even have that many scenes together, but these scenes do an amazing job of fleshing out both characters, and I think they both end up much more compelling for their shared screentime.

A bit late to the party, but I started watching Word of Honor a couple weeks ago now. I’m trying to hold myself to only watching two episodes a day, for the sake of my sleep schedule and to avoid blowing through it too quickly. 24 episodes in and it’s, uh, definitely getting harder not to binge the rest so maybe I’ll make an afternoon of it sometime this week-end :p

extremely vague and minor spoilers; mostly just me gushing about Cao Weining though )

From a quick look at AO3, it doesn't look like there’ll be a lot to read for my primarily gen-loving self, but I can’t wait to dig into what's there.

Small end-of-year update:

1)Still working on that Yue Qingyuan fic! After much hemming and hawing, I ended up splitting it into three chapters for ease of reading. I’m still nowhere near done with it (a couple scenes need major rewrites to account for a last-minute plot change; a lot more need some serious restructuring; and once that's done I still need to reach out to various people for beta-reading, which will take a while because the fic is long), but I reread chapter 1 yesterday, and you know? It’s really good.

2)Yuletide came and went, and I got a lovely iZombie fic, with just the perfect amount of holiday cheer to lift me up! I haven’t had much time to browse the collection yet, but I marked a ton of fics for later and hopefully I’ll be able to dive in soon-ish.

3)I signed up for Fannish Fifty, in the hopes that it would nudge me towards using DW a little bit more next year! Even if I don’t manage the full fifty, I’d like to finally make a habit of writing out at least one (1) post for each book or video game I enjoy, if only so I can look back on it later. That, or I’ll just write a whole bunch of drabbles. That works too.

That Yue Qingyuan fic is not getting finished by the end of the year, but it is currently 20k words and a complete rough draft so there’s that.

I keep thinking I want to use this blog more often and then... not doing that -_- still figuring out what I even want to use it for (I really want a space to talk more in-depth about books, video games, and assorted fandom-adjacent things, but 'whenever the mood strikes me' just means I never get around to it, and trying to stick to even a loose schedule makes it unfun), but since there's no time like the present, have a quick update:

1)Comment Bingo Round 2 has started, so I went and grabbed a card! I probably won't go out of my way to fill it, but as always when I dip out of fandom for a while, I'm having a hard time picking up commenting habits again so hopefully this will give me the nudge I want!

2)[community profile] seasonsofdrabbles fall round SOON! I'm so excited for this one :D

3)For the past few weeks my brain has been entirely consumed by three different Yue Qingyuan-centric fic projects, and I finally caved in and accepted that this would be my main creative endeavour for the foreseeable future. Currently 3000 words (!?! how) into the first one and vaguely hopeful it might get finished by the end of the year? Maybe? That would be nice? Especially since,

4)I'm still on the fence about signing up for Yuletide. 1000 words is not the daunting task it would have been a few years ago, and 'tis the season for nostalgia fandoms, buuuut I'm enjoying not having a deadline a little too much at the moment xD guess we'll see once sign-ups are actually underway.

What are your fannish end-of-year projects?

In their little house by the water, news are few and far between: the price they both pay for a peace well-earned. They would know, surely, if anything had happened, the world surely would find a way to let them know – but still Cheon-gi’s paintings echo unvoiced worries, still Ha Ram looks for answers in the night sky.

Until one year later Yangmyeong, older now for the blood on his hands but wiser, too, all demons finally laid to rest, offers them the same easy smile and, arms laden with gifts for their shared birthday, comes in from the cold.

Bernadetta sat, shoulders and neck hunched, like a turtle desperately trying to get back into its shell. Unfortunately for her, in this case the shell was a whole fifteen-minute walk away and the turtle stranded on horseback, stretching the metaphor to its breaking point.

Beside her, Marianne was speaking to the horse in low, soothing tones.

"She can tell you're nervous, and that makes her nervous too,” she explained to Bernadetta. “You don't have to worry. She won't let you fall."

She put a hand on Bernadetta’s knee.

Slowly, Bernadetta unfolded in her saddle like a flower in the sun.

Now that the official translation is out in full, I took the time to reread The Scum Villain Self-Saving System and man. I forgot how hard the ending went on Thematic Resonance.

As a writer, this is the kind of satisfying payoff I aspire to. As a reader, that kind of thing is why I'm still thinking about this novel one year later.

The wound was garish, almost grotesque, muscle and bone scraping against each other under Shen Jiu’s less than gentle handling. The man scowled like the blood and gore were personal affronts to his sense of decorum.

“Most people would use their sword to block,” he commented tartly. “But I suppose that’s too common for Shixiong.”

I've been stalling hard on the Snowflake Challenge and... everything else, really, as the winter sads set in.

But: rthstewart’s three sentence ficathon is running again this year, and as always it's a treasure trove of fun prompts.

Micro fills round-up, to be updated as I go:

Some Dragonlance daemon headcanons I initially shared for this year’s Snowflake Challenge! I’ve been jotting them down whenever I’ve needed a quick and easy distraction to go with my series reread, so they’re a bit of a mess, but I still stand by them.

Quick sketch to unwind.
'French cancan pokémon' is a concept I did not appreciate enough when Gen 6 came out, tbh.

Also serves as a fill for the smell square of this bingo card, since that's this evolutionary line's whole deal.

The man they found on the side of the road is the same sort of liar as her, only less good at it. Maybe it's that his guard is down, now that he believes there are no eyes on him, but she doesn't think so — he's too mean to be a good actor, this one, too much of a bully to hide for very long. More likely it's just plain rotten luck, that daozhang can't see the triumph on his face when he finds a new way to be cruel.

She keeps her own face blank, and starts making plans.

Rushuang fell upon the kitchen like a hurricane, picking up then quickly discarding pots, pans, and knives with the cheerful enthusiasm of one who would not have to tidy up afterwards.

Fei Yuan shadowed her every step, fretting and fuming at this intrusion in his domain, but eventually even he was forced to admit she knew what she was doing.

Still, he watched closely as she oh-so-carefully excised the poisonous organs, and moved just in time to prevent the (perfectly edible! this is a delicacy, jiejie, show some respect!) rest of the fish from ending up on the kitchen floor.

The river has always been his favourite playground: everywhere he looks, there is a memory.

He watches it turn red with the blood of childhood.

The pain traces lines of fire across his back; every move a firework.

He shifts his shoulders, idly, every time his body thinks to sleep.

-

wind thunder-howls past his ears no air in his lungs everything so loud ground coming up too fast can't breathe can't breathe can't even clo

-

The taste of iron never leaves his mouth anymore.

Better than nothing, he thinks, better than hunger: then the hunger gives way to something worse.

-

The wood smells rotten, but so does everything else. Even he stinks of decay.

It will serve him well, if it can withstand the carving.

Of all the rules that steered the course of Wangji's life, there were three that no-one else knew about:

first touch, life;

second touch, death;

no more than sixty seconds in between.

The third rule was of utmost importance, because Wangji was never the one who paid the price of breaking it.

But this was Wei Ying, coming back to precious life at Wangji's touch, already in movement, already smiling, as if this was just a chance meeting between old friends, even though his death had been anything but peaceful. This was Wei Ying, and Wangji—

Wangji forgot the time.
