Charlotte, when she wants to, can make herself sugary-sweet. Watching her flutter around camp, leaving men swooning in her wake—Beruka could almost believe it, if she hadn't already seen her on the battlefield. Certainly her smiles are as deadly as her axe.
But as they spend more time together another picture starts to form: the Charlotte who sends money home, who gets Nyx to laugh and sits with Benny when he gets anxious; the true Charlotte, hidden behind layers.
Beruka has never been anyone but herself, barely knows who that is on a good day.
Watching Charlotte, she learns.
